About this game
Blockwild is a 3D sandbox where you explore, dig and build in a world made of blocks. Each new world is grown from a seed number using layered noise, sculpting rolling plains, forests, beaches, lakes and the occasional cave system, so no two seeds ever look alike. Walk, jump and swim through it in first person, then break any block you can reach and place it wherever you like from your nine-slot toolbar of grass, dirt, stone, cobblestone, sand, logs, planks, glass and brick. A full day and night cycle moves the sun and moon across a gradient sky, casts real shadows and lights a starfield once the sun goes down, while water ripples and catches the light along shorelines and lakes. Everything you dig or build is saved automatically to your own browser, tied to that world's seed, so you can close the tab and pick your project back up later exactly where you left it. It runs entirely in the browser, with no download and no installation, and includes simple on-screen controls for phones and tablets as well as the usual mouse-and-keyboard setup for desktop.
Controls
- Keyboard and mouse: W, A, S and D to move, mouse to look around. Space to jump, and hold Shift to sprint.
- Break and place: left click places your selected block against whatever you are looking at; right click breaks it. Clicking directly on a door opens or closes it instead, whatever you have selected.
- Toolbar: press 1 to 9, or 0 for the 10th slot (Torch), or scroll the mouse wheel (or just tap a slot on touch), to choose a block to place.
- Pause: press Esc at any time to open the pause menu, adjust settings, or save and quit.
- Touch screens: the left thumbstick moves you, the JUMP button jumps, and anywhere else on the screen you drag to look around, tap to place a block, or press and hold to break one.
Tips and strategy
- Punch downward sparingly. Falling into an open cave or a lake can mean a long climb back up, so it helps to check what is below before you dig straight down.
- Chop a whole tree in one visit. Logs and leaves do not respawn on their own, so gather what you need for planks and building while you are already there.
- Glass lets light and view through but still blocks movement, which makes it a good choice for windows without giving up shelter.
- Night does not add any creatures, but it still makes ledges, cave mouths and open water much harder to spot, so placing a torch or two or waiting until morning can save you a fall.
- A torch can only be placed against a solid block, doesn't block your path the way other blocks do, and lights up the area around it — good for marking a cave entrance or lighting up a house from the inside.
- A Door starts closed and blocks the way, just like a wall. Click it to open or close it instead of placing another block — handy for keeping a house sealed up until you actually want to walk through.
- Sand only appears close to sea level, so if you are hunting for a beach to build on, head for the lowest, flattest ground you can find.
- Your world autosaves every few seconds and again whenever you leave the tab, but using Save & Quit from the pause menu is the surest way to lock in a big build before closing the browser.
